It controls the timing of the internal combustion engine by synchronising the camshaft and crankshaft as they rotate. That’s why you should always get your cambelt replaced at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals – this tends to be around 60,000 miles but varies depending on your vehicle’s manufacturer.
